Oak Class - Summer 2018

Dear Parents / Carers,

Staffing

This term Oak class will be taught by Mrs Cox Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Mrs Nye on Thursday and Friday. Our Teaching Assistants for this term will be Mrs Cameron and Mrs Beer. We are also fortunate to have Miss Foot, a student Teacher from Chichester University, working with Oak Class for 7 weeks.

The Curriculum

Our topic for this term is “Brave New World”, where the focus for the term is History and Science. We will be looking at Humans, including animals and the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements looking at the exploration of Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. After half term the children will be learning about ‘Living and Growing,’ which is Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), within this unit the children will be learning the correct names for the body parts which is part of the National Curriculum. If you have any questions or would like to see the materials being used please come to a ‘drop in’ after school with Mrs Taylor on Tuesday 1st May. Please see the topic web planner attached and for more information please see the class page on the school website or on our class page on DB Primary.

If your child has any books, pictures or artefacts they would like to bring in related to the topic we will happily display them.

PE will be on a Wednesday afternoon and Games on a Friday afternoon. This term we will be working on Rounders and Fitness until half term and then Gymnastics and Swimming.  Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named and that earrings are not worn for safety reasons. If your child has recently had their ears pierced and they need to keep studs in, please provide your child with tape to cover the earrings.

We would really appreciate any parents willing to give up 20 minutes in the morning to hear a few children read as this is an invaluable skill for the children to learn.

Home Learning

The children will all be bringing home a homework pack which will include;

  • A reading record with their Db Primary log inside the front cover,
  • a topic grid,
  • a homework book to put their work in,
  • a spelling book.

Please continue to complete the reading record to keep a log of when your child has read as we will be collecting them in to award raffle tickets for the reading raffle when they have read 3 times a week.

Spellings and Rapid Racers homework be given out with weekly tests on Wednesdays. The children will also receive weekly alternate Maths and English homework to be completed in their homework books and will need to be handed in on a Wednesday and given back out on a Friday. If your child wishes to attend homework club on Friday lunchtimes they may sign up and do their homework at school.

The grid contains homework tasks which support the topic through Science, Arts and Technology. The children can choose the homework tasks which they would like to complete and they will be awarded 10 house points for each piece completed and shared in school. The children will have a homework book where the work they have completed can be stuck. The homework grid can also be found on DB Primary on the Oak Class page.

Can we please ask that every child brings a named water bottle to school.  It can be filled up at school and we will send them home on Fridays for washing. It is extremely important to keep the children hydrated both for their health and for their ability to learn. Could we please ask for named coats and wellies to be in school so we can make the most of the outdoor environment.

Please can I remind you that the children should not be bringing any toys into school unless they are for a class topic display, as these could get accidently get broken or lost.

We are always happy to discuss any questions or queries that you may have about your child so please feel free to come in and see us. The end of the day is always preferable unless it is something urgent that cannot wait. We want to work together in partnership to support your child’s education.

Yours sincerely

Mrs S Cox &  Mrs C Nye, Class Teachers
