'A small school with huge opportunities'

Oak Spring 2017

Our topic for this half term is “Stone Age to Iron Age”, where we will start by looking at the timeline and how long ago the stone age began. This is a History based topic which is enriched via the texts we will be teaching in class such as “The Wild Girl” and “Stone Age Boy”.

Please see the topic web planner attached for more information. If your child has any books, pictures or artefacts they would like to bring in related to the topic we will happily share and display them.

Home Learning

New reading records have been given to the children and we will be asking for your support in continuing to read at home at least 3 times a week. Mrs Jones will collect the reading records in every Friday and if they have been signed 3 times by an adult, your child will receive a raffle ticket and they are entered into our reading challenge. At the end of each half term a name will be drawn from each class box and the child with the winning ticket will receive a prize for their committed reading. We hope you will encourage your child and support them to collect as many raffle tickets as possible.

Spellings and Rapid Racers will continue this half term with weekly tests on Wednesday for Rapid Racers and Thursday for Spellings. The children will be rewarded with certificates for their achievements.

On Thursdays, the children will also receive weekly alternate Maths and English homework to be completed in their homework books and handed in on the following Wednesday.

We will also be sending home a topic grid. On the grid will be home learning tasks which support the topic through a variety of areas of the curriculum. The children can choose the homework tasks which they would like to complete. Year 3 children will need to complete 3 tasks and Year 2 children will need to complete 2 tasks by Friday 24th March to share with the class before the end of term. Any children completing a task will receive 5 house points.

Can we please ask that every child brings a named water bottle to school. It can be filled up at school from the water coolers and we will send them home on a Friday for washing. It is extremely important to keep the children hydrated both for their health and for their ability to learn.

Could we please ask for named coats and wellies to be in school so we can make the most of the outdoor environment.

PE will be on a Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon. This term we will be working on our gymnastics and tag rugby skills and after half term on our dance and tennis skills. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named and that earrings are not worn for safety reasons. If your child has recently had their ears pierced and they need to keep studs in, please provide your child with tape to cover the earrings.

We would really appreciate more parents willing to give up 20 minutes in the morning to hear a few children read as this is an invaluable skill for the children to learn. Please contact the school office if you can help.

We are always happy to discuss any questions or queries that you may have about your child so please feel free to come in and see us. The end of the day is always preferable as we are teaching in class from 8.40am. However, there are adults on duty at the entrance should you need to pass on a message.

Yours sincerely

Mrs S Cox & Mrs S Jones
