'A small school with huge opportunities'

Willow Autumn 2016

Our topic this term is called ‘Me and my Bear’ and we will be learning about the lives and habitats of bears around the world. We will also look at the history of the Teddy Bear as a popular toy.

To begin, we will be looking at the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear and at the repetitive language contained in this text. Next we will read the wonderful story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. This will give the children the opportunity to learn about text mapping and the use of adjectives.  We will then use these language features to produce an independent piece of writing based on the book.

Our maths will be a combination of many different areas of learning including number, shape and space, measure and time. Year one will be using clocks to learn the hour and half hour and our reception children will initially  be practising their numbers to 20 extending beyond this as the term and their expertise progress.

In science we will be looking at how bears have adapted to their environment and how they use camouflage to help them stay safe. We will also learn about how bears use their senses and how we use ours.

In art the children will produce a portrait of themselves and their bear and also we will use various mediums to create pictures of different kinds of bears.

Our P.E. will be on Wednesday afternoons with Impulse Leisure plus dance and gymnastic sessions on Friday afternoons.  Please ensure your child has a named P.E. kit in school including jogging bottoms, plimsolls and trainers for outdoor wear.  Also please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school.  It can be filled up at school from the water coolers and we will send them home on a Friday for washing.

It would be very helpful if you could share your child’s reading book with them. They will change their books on a daily basis as part of our class routine and will read to an adult in the classroom on a regular basis.

If you can help in any way towards our learning, we would love you to come into class and share you knowledge, skills and expertise.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Taylor
